The “Organic Results” are Google’s best guess as to which sites have the information a Google user is looking for. Conversely, the maps are Google’s best guess about what matches your search where it’s physically closest to you.
Our data shows that lately Google has been really favoring the directories: You’ll frequently see Lawyers.com, Martindale, Yelp and AVVO, when you perform these kinds of searches. Now, on the mobile version, Google does place smaller law firms higher up in the results, above Yellow Pages, Martindale-Hubbell, Justia and the like. I attribute some of that, if not a lot of it, to the fact that these websites are mobile-friendly, whereas the major directories for the most part are not properly formatted for smartphones. This speaks to the value of having a mobile version of your website.
If you don’t have a mobile version of your website, you should, (although the ideal time was a year ago to do it, or at the very least, April 2015, when Google announced that it was using the mobile compatibility as a ranking factor on smartphone searches).
It’s never too late to improve your organic results and overall visibility by making your website mobile-friendly and if you’re not sure how to go about it, give us a call and maybe we can help direct you towards some options.
